Construction

Construction and traffic are two things you cannot escape in my town. When it's 5pm in the afternoon after work there are certain roads you know not to take. I've never been big on driving main roads. Most of the time I try to take the back roads but even those seem to be under construction these days.

Here are some tips when traveling around town. Know the roads that are under construction and leave in enough time to get where your going in case you run into construction traffic.

Lemon Pound Cake

Birthdays are my favorite! I love to bake goodies for my friends and family on their birthdays. Yesterday was my future sister-in-laws birthday and I baked her a lemon pound cake.

I just enjoy seeing the face on the person when I give it to them. I also like the gratification of someone telling me that the sweet I baked them is really cute or that it taste good. It's the best feeling.

Spelling Practice

Tonight I got to hang out with my brother and his family. It was his finance's birthday today and I brought her a cake I baked for her. After we ate cake her son had to do homework. I decided to join in and write the spelling words as she called them out. I did pretty good. Only word I had trouble with is February.

Room Key Collection

One thing I have always enjoyed doing is traveling. I have many memories when I was growing up traveling with my mother and grandmother. I also went on many vacations with my family for my brothers travel baseball team in the summers.

On my trips I always try to keep a room key. It's one of my favorite things to collect. Some of them I wrote on to tell where I traveled too. One of the coolest room keys I got was when I went to Disney World with an organization I was in, in high school and the room key had my name on it and it was part of the package.

One day I have hopes of traveling out of the country. My destination of choice would be Rome ;).

Mirror Sunset

The sunset is always so beautiful on my way home in the evening. There are several pictures I see and don't stop to take. My favorite thing to see are great white and blue herons. One day I will make that my post! Today is a picture of the sunset through my side mirror. Sunsets always make such pretty scenes in the sky.

Wind and Water

This afternoon I went shopping with a friend and got a few dresses. I just needed to get out the house for a few hours and an afternoon drive. It was so windy this afternoon and the rain has been steady. At our first stop I saw a puddle that would make a lovely picture. I like how the wind made ripples and it makes this puddle look like a lake.

Candy Land

Yet another Mardi Gras post. What can I say? It's Tableaux season :D. Tonight I took pictures at a Tableaux "Down the Bayou". It was for an upcoming children's parade. The theme was Candy Land. I got to play with my new lens and flash. I took some pretty awesome pictures. I still need some practice with them though. This tableaux was a bit more casual and on a smaller scale than most. I feel like the smaller tableaux are easier to shoot and I have more control of them. Also the people are usually really friendly. Here are a few pictures I took for the night.

Cameras

Though I started doing photography before I was in high school I really became interested in it when I was in the photography club in high school. Digital photography was a thing but film photography was still popular. I started using my mom's film camera. I did some black and white and developed film in a dark room as well which was really neat.

Christmas my senior year is when I got my first professional dslr camera, which I still use today. I payed for half and my parents paid the other half.

Before I had my current camera and before high school I had a small, film, point and shoot Cannon. It was a 38-155mm.

Today I mostly shoot with my Nikon D40x, but I also have a Nikon Coolpix camera that I keep in my purse. I also use my iPhone to take pictures.

Rain Drops

As I lay here and write this post I can hear the rain outside of my window and the sound of light thunder in the distance. It has been such a dark and gloomy afternoon in South Louisiana. On a day like this it makes you want to just crawl in bed and fall asleep. Often on days like this it not always "picture perfect" weather and you have to find alternatives. You can take pictures inside, thats always an option. However this afternoon when I got home from work I wanted to take pictures of the rain from my front porch. Of course I didn't really get the picture I liked or wanted to achieve. I did get to play with my flash and got maybe one fun shot that I liked.

If something doesn't work, try again or try something else. I looked to my left to the flower bed and I found a bush I've always been fascinated with. Its called a Callistemon, often referred to as a bottlebrushes because the flowers look like brushes that you would clean a baby bottle with. I got some pretty breath taking shots using my new lens and flash. The dark night and my flash added nice contrast with the water droplets on the flower.

Cajun Music

Tonight me and a friend went to listen to some Cajun music down in Thibodaux, Louisiana. There is a group called the Cajun Music Preservation Society that plays at different local dive bars in the area. It's an open mic night where people can play their instruments and keep the Cajun music alive! It's always a good time. The photojournalist at the college I went to whose also a friend of mine, was one of the founders of the organization. They also collect money at every gathering for a scholarship that will go to a student in Cajun Culture studies.

I also used my new flash and zoom lens tonight. I'm still practicing and learning how to use both. Here is my favorite picture I took for the night. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do :).

Pink

Today's theme is the color pink. Since I was a little girl my favorite color has always been pink. Most of my room is pink and most of the things I own are pink. It's just such a great color in every shade of it.

The four items that I picked was a pink cupcake piggy bank, a pink rubber duckie, a pink paper flower and a pink camera ornament.

All of the items I picked are a representation of me. I love to bake cupcakes, I collect rubber duckies, photography is my passion and part of my profession and the flower represents my creativity. Though I didn't make the flower I often make and create things like it.

Afternoon Adventures

Had another doctor's appointment today. The doctor told me that I need to do some physical therapy for my ankle. He believes that will help my ankle improve. Today was also Martin Luther King day and the kids were off of school today. My brother's fiancé had to work today so my mom kept her little boy. He tagged along to the doctors appointment. After my appointment we ran a few errands, got ice cream and ended up at the park. Here are a few pictures of our adventure. He's such a cute kid and I enjoy spending time with him!

Quote of the day: We were at sonic and I got him an ice cream Sunday and he responds "I'm having a Sunday on a Monday." haha I thought it was cute!

Soaking

Has been such a long and exhausting week. Today was a totally lazy day where I slept late and stayed in my pjs all day. I did clothes and dishes. The rest of the day I watched tv.

My ankle has been in a boot since before Christmas and tonight it was quite painful so I decided to soak it in some Epson salt and now I'm resting it and watching pitch perfect.

Mardi Gras Time!

Took pictures at my first Tableaux of the Mardi Gras Season tonight. Every Tableaux I've been to is different and I can never predict how to dress. Tonight they dressed more casually and I wore a dress. Oh well, I always look professional. Tonight I tried out my new lens and flash.

What I learned about my new flash:
  • I need more practice.
  • I need to invest in rechargeable AA batteries for the flash and bring extras with me. The flash uses them so fast!
  • I took some pretty awesome pictures with the flash.

Overall I think I got some pretty awesome shots. I met my deadline because I brought a hotspot with me. And last but not least, I left before all the crazy people did. Until next weekend...

FLASHBACK FRIDAY - turtle farm

Today's photos were taken when I was in college before I graduated. I wrote a story on a turtle farm. Was actually pretty interesting to learn about. In these ponds there were thousands of turtles and you could see their little heads pop up.

The turtles would lay their eggs on the bank under these metal tins. After the eggs were laid the workers, who were mostly high school students would collect the eggs in little baskets that were soon after rinsed off in a Clorox bath to prevent salmonella. The eggs were stored in boxes in a room for several weeks before they hatched. Some are put back into the pond while other turtles were shipped over seas.

Carrot Cupcakes

Something I really enjoy doing is baking cupcakes. What I love even more is decorating them. I go into so much detail and spend so much time doing them. It's an art creation when I'm finished. I enjoy making them for family and friends on their birthdays and also for holidays.

Today's post are of my most recent cupcakes. This time I played Betty Crocker and made carrot cupcakes from scratch. I grated the carrots and mixed all the ingredients together not sure how they would turn out. I feel like they came out pretty good and the reviews on them were that they were really good. I did however try to make homemade cream cheese icing and broke the mixer ha. But I suppose things like that happen sometimes. When they do you go to the grocery store at 9pm and the cupcakes get done just the same.

Courier Adventures

I know today's post is a little late, but I promise you I did not forget about my post! I was actually taking dozens of pictures tonight. 80 to be exact. Sometimes I feel like I don't take enough pictures and wind up with a plethora of pictures. Tonight I was assigned to take pictures at a chamber of commerce banquet in Houma for The Courier, a paper that I do a bit of stringing/freelance photography for. The paper always takes me on interesting adventures and I always have a story to tell. At some of the events I get to see head officials of the city, state, and sometimes the country. I get to take pictures of prominent people and most of the time I'm behind the scenes. I've come to recognize who different people are and people recognize me and smile now,  or maybe it's just the camera? For banquets in town, I'm usually assigned to just take pictures before the event starts of people mingling and then people sitting at their tables, then I leave so I can go home to upload the pictures that usually just end up on an online album. Tonight was different though. The company that I work for was there and I got to mingle with some of my coworkers, they invited me to sit at their table and I got to stay the duration of the banquet. I got to listen to these prominent business people and officials talk.

The key note speaker for the night was Capt. Richard Phillips, whose ship was captured by Somali Pirates and also had a movie made about him with Tom Hanks. He was very interesting to listen to and a very practical man with some great insight and wisdom. After hearing a story like that it makes you reevaluate your life and realize how lucky you are to simply be alive and in a country such as America. If you do get a chance you should watch the movie Captain Phillips and read his book A Captain's Duty by Richard Phillips.

Not liking all of this cold weather, so ready for spring or summer already! Wish I was at the beach with my toes in the sand. Maybe at the pool on a hot summer day or tanning in the back yard. Today's post is summer inspired.

Low angles

My picture that I'm posting today is from Mardi Gras last year. This was quite a fun picture to take because when I took a picture of the little boy he decided to go lower to the ground and I went lower to the ground with him to get this great low angle shot. Sometimes the best pictures come from the unexpected moments. My first shot of this little boy wasn't as fun. People love to get their pictures taken and when they notice you are taking the picture they will do the craziest things!

I thought this was an appropriate picture too for today as Mardi Gras is soon approaching. I can't wait to shoot a few tableaux with the Courier. Keep a look out for my pictures and I will be sure to post them.

Boot

Since before Christmas I have been wearing a boot on my foot because of a sprained ankle. I went to the doctor last Monday and he told me I have to wear it for another two weeks... My "constalation prize" as my mother called it was she took me for a pedicure. Today I went shopping for a bit and hobbled around the mall.

Though I still have to wear my boot for another week (maybe more), atleast my toes look pretty.

Tonight I'm staying in, watching hallmark movies and sipping on some hot chocolate on this cold winter day. I've never been one to like coffee or tea but have always been a fan of hot chocolate and hot apple cider :).

"Chili"

Every year weather gets chilly my mom makes gumbo and chili. I have fond memories of my mother cooking chili on Halloween, she cooks it every year on that day when it's just starting to get cold.

Tonight on a cold winter night I'm enjoying her chilly, chocolate, and a movie under blankets. Keep warm yall!

Aunt in Training.

Tonight I'm having a sleepover with lil man. Not family by blood but almost family. When his mom marries my brother I'll be his step aunt.

We ate hot dogs with chilly, hung out by the fire and we watched night at the museum under the covers. Taking selfies was fun and we made silly faces.

Hanging out with him is so much fun. He's such a silly little boy and he cracks me up.

Chasing the Sun

Today I decided to go on an adventure to try out my zoom lens. I get off of work at 5pm everyday so at this time of the year I am driving home when the sun is going down. As I was driving home I kept looking how amazing the sun looked setting and decided to follow the sun until I found a spot where I could take a cool photo of it safely. I wound up stopping at a restaurant and taking a picture of it from across the street where there was a field with farm equipment... I just wanted the trees and the sun setting though... By the time I took the picture the sun wasn't even in the shot but I still got some amazing pictures of the sky. Today I'll post several pictures because I couldnt just pick one shot!
